Business Foundation

Dr Steve Goosen

The founder of GSP, is well-known as the architect of the BHP Billiton occupational health system that has long set the benchmark for standards in occupational health.  He has in excess of 25 years’ of experience in the mining industry, ranging from disaster management, hospital management, to occupational health service management.

He has also performed consulting for multi-national corporates throughout Africa, including health impact assessments, situational analyses and health service delivery reviews.

Apart from qualifications in tropical medicine, community health, occupational health, health management, travel medicine, ATLS and “B Grade” reader for chest x-rays, Six Sigma Executive Yellow Belt, he also holds a M.Sc. in epidemiology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

With a special interest in system design he has designed and optimised numerous health systems. His interest in information management has been instrumental in setting up systems enabling advanced statistical analysis in occupational health.

He has also received a number of achievement awards with BHP Billiton such as for the development of a Rehabilitation in the Workplace programme at Khutala, and the development of the “Fit-for-Life” BHP Billiton wellness programme.


Dr Kevin Staunton

One of the founding members, is an occupational medical practitioner with more than 15 years’ experience in the mining industry.  He has been instrumental in the establishment of the Koornfontein Mines system that has been accepted as the de facto benchmark in integrating occupational medicine and hygiene.  Dr Staunton also has extensive experience in the provision of primary healthcare services in Witbank over the past 12 years and is a founder member of the Night-Doc, the trauma unit at Cosmos hospital in Witbank.

Apart from holding a qualification in occupational health, he also holds qualifications in ATLS, ACLS and PALS, B-grade x-ray reader and he also has extensive experience of living at altitude and altitude sickness.  He also has a light aircraft pilot’s license.

Mariette Goosen

Also a founder member, is the administration manager performing all company secretary duties. She is also responsible for the operation of all x-ray units, inclusive of quality assurance. She is well-known for setting the early benchmark in x-ray quality assurance systems for BHP Billiton, including for ISO purposes.
